“You’re Doing It Exactly Right”

Bertis Downs has long taught writing and entertainment law at the University of Georgia. He says: “When the band would come off the road, after being busy and out of town for two years, we would come back (to Athens, Georgia) and have essentially a year off. I’d go and teach my Entertainment Law class.”29 Similarly, Johanna Fatemen of Le Tigre teaches “Art and Protest” at New York University. She says: “What I try to encourage my students to do, what I think is important, it’s just so basic; is to find something that you’re personally invested in. Aesthetics, of course, are crucial. I just think that what’s going to carry you through can dictate the form. The style is something that you actually care about. And whatever skills you learn, they’re not going to be meaningful unless they’re in service of a vision that has some real meaning to you.”30 Dar Williams has taught a course called “Music Movements in a Capitalist Democracy” at Wesleyan University. She says:

We did a map of Greenwich Village. I named some things and I told the kids to look up addresses. We found things in Suze’s book [Bob Dylan’s early girlfriend, Suze Rotolo] and in Don’t Look Back and in some other things. There were these things that were named and I said, ‘Pull out addresses, pull out names.’ So we had White Horse Tavern and we had the Café Wha? We had the whole 9 yards of all those things. I had the bagel shop and I had Allan Block’s sandal shop because people used to play old time piano there—and Washington Square Park and an unfinished furniture store there. I said, ‘Why do you think I put the bagel shop and this coffee shop and the unfinished furniture in the mix?’ And one of the kids said: ‘Because they’re all cheap?’ And I said, ‘Because they’re cheap!’31
